How Do You Know You Are Ready to Start Your Own Practice?

So how do you know when you are ready to start your own private practice? Unfortunately, readiness doesn’t magically appear one day. Most of the therapists I have worked with through this decision did not feel ready when they made it. They felt uncertain, a little anxious, and reasonably prepared, and then they started anyway. It’s what started my journey too.
Readiness is a series of steps
Waiting to feel fully confident before starting a private practice usually means waiting indefinitely, because confidence tends to build through doing the work, not before it. What actually matters is whether the conditions are in place to take the leap. Do you have the hours and supervision required for your registration? Do you have a basic system for intake, scheduling, and billing? Do you have consultation or supervision support lined up for when complex cases come in?
Questions worth asking before you leap
What is your why? Why do you even want to do this? Are you prepared to wear both the Therapist and CEO hats? What is your financial runway if the first few months are slower than expected? What kind of clients and presenting concerns do you actually want to see? What are my regulatory requirements, such as: who is going to sign off on my CRPO RP(qualifying) Direct Client Contact Hours for the clients I see in private practice?
What support can help you sort through
A good supervisor will not tell you that you are ready. They will help you get honest about what is actually in place and what still needs building, so the decision is grounded in information rather than fear or impatience, and you are building a practice that is aligned with your personal and professional ethics and standards of practice.
If you are weighing this decision, supervision is a good place to think it through out loud.
