How to Find a CRPO Compliant Clinical Supervisor

If you're a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), an RP working toward independent practice, or a student preparing to enter the profession, clinical supervision isn't optional. It's a condition of your registration with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). But not every experienced clinician who offers supervision automatically meets CRPO's definition of a clinical supervisor, and the responsibility for confirming that fit sits with you, not the College. Here's what to look for.

Why “CRPO Compliant” Matters

CRPO does not pre-approve supervisors and does not keep a public list of qualified ones. If you complete supervision hours with someone who doesn't meet the College's criteria, those hours may not count toward your registration or your progress to independent practice. Confirming compliance up front protects your timeline, your finances, and your peace of mind.

The Five Requirements a CRPO Compliant Supervisor Must Meet 

For RP (Qualifying) and RP (without independent status), a clinical supervisor must meet the following current supervisor criteria (CRPO 2024):

1. Be registered in good standing with a regulatory college whose members may practise psychotherapy (this includes CRPO, OCSWSSW, and several other Ontario colleges).

2. Have five years of extensive clinical experience practising psychotherapy, counted from the time they graduated from their psychotherapy education or training program.

3. Meet CRPO's own “independent practice” requirement: 1,000 direct client contact (DCC) hours and 150 hours of clinical supervision, completed over the course of their career.

4. Have completed 30 hours of directed learning in providing clinical supervision. For anyone who began supervising on or after April 1, 2026, this must be a 30-hour course that follows CRPO's Supervision Course Guideline.

5. Have completed CRPO's free online learning module on clinical supervision.

A supervisor who meets these five criteria should be able to provide you with a letter attesting to their competency if you ask for one. You don't need to submit this to CRPO unless staff specifically request it.

Know Your Own Hour Requirements

How much supervision you need, and in what format, depends on where you are in your registration journey:

●       RP (Qualifying): 100 hours of clinical supervision and 450 DCC hours are required to transfer into the Registered Psychotherapist category. At least half of your supervision hours must be individual or dyadic. A recommended minimum of about one hour of supervision per week is typical at this stage.

●       RP (without independent practice): ongoing supervision is required until you've completed 1,000 DCC hours and 150 supervision hours in total, with at least half in individual or dyadic format. A recommended minimum of about one hour every two weeks is typical here.

●       Group supervision can count toward part of your total, as long as the group is formal and structured, includes three to eight supervisees.

Questions to Ask Before You Start

Before committing to a supervision arrangement, it's reasonable and expected to ask a prospective supervisor:

●       Which regulatory college are you registered with, and are you in good standing?

●       Have you met CRPO's independent practice requirement (1,000 DCC hours and 150 supervision hours)?

●       When did you begin providing clinical supervision, and have you completed the 30-hour directed learning requirement that applies to you?

●       Have you completed CRPO's online learning module on clinical supervision?

●       Can you provide a letter attesting to your qualifications if I need one for my file?
